What is STAR Station ?
  STAR Stations are Smog check stations that meet higher performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Star Station can test any car requiring a smog check.

What vehicles are required a Smog Check ?
Gasoline vehicles, model year 1976 and newer require a Smog Check with following exception.
* Eight model-year and newer do not need a biennial Smog Check.
* Four model-year and newer do not need a change-of-ownership Smog Check.
Diesel vehicle, model year 1998 and newer with GVWR 14000 lbs or less require Smog Check.

Who is responsible for obtaining a Smog Check when a vehicle is sold?
It is the responsibility of the seller to provide a valid smog check certificate at the time of delivery of the vehicle. There is no provision in the law to sell a vehicle "as is".

For how long is a Smog Check certificate valid?
A smog check certificate of compliance or non-compliance is valid for 90 days.

Do I need Smog Check on sales within immediate familly ?
The California Vehicle code exempts transfers from parents, grandparents,
children, grandchildren, siblings, or spouses from the smog inspection requirement.

What do you mean My Car's Not Ready (Incomlete) and Failed ?
 

If the emission control system has been reset after repair,
or If the battery had been disconnected or replaced recently,
and the vehicle has not been driven enough for the vehicle's readiness monitors to detect any emission failure.

What is an OBD2 readiness monitor ?
  Most 1996 and newer vehicles self-test their emission control system using
various monitors. (Readiness monitors)

How many "Not-Ready" Report (Incomplete Monitors) are Allowed to pass California Smog ?
Gasoline Vehicles,
For vehicles year model 1996-1999, any one incomplete Monitor allowed to Pass OBD Test.
For vehicles year model 2000 and newer, only incomplete monitor for Evaporative system allowed to pass OBD Test.
For vehicles year model 2010 and newer, only incomplete monitor for Evaporative system allowed and PDTC (Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Code) must not be present to pass OBD Test.

Diesle vehicles,
For vehicle year model 1998-2006, all of the monitors to be ready to Pass OBD Test.
For vehicle year model 2007 and newer, any one incomplete Monitor allowed to pass OBD Test.

What is PDTC (Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Code) ?
 

It is similar to regular Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). However unlike regular DTCs, they cannot be reset by disconnecting the vehicle's battery or cleared using an On-Board Diagnostic(OBD) Scan tool.
The Only way to clear a PDTC is to fix the vehicle's problem, and then allow the vehicle sufficient drive time for the monitor to make sure the problem no longer exist.

• 15 warm-up cycles have been completed since code clearing, and
• 200 miles have been driven since code clearing


PDTCs has been included as part of the Smog Check Inspection failure criteria from July 1, 2019 and to the vehicle model-year 2010 and newer that support PTDCs.
